The Ministry of Internal Affairs has trained police, religious leaders and other stake holder to prevent the trafficking of persons in Bukwo.
The training targeted the police officers in the CID, DPC, Community Liaison Officers, Crime Intelligence, religious leaders and Resident District Commissioner while the district officials comprised Probation officers, Community development officers and media.
They were trained on Wednesday 17th June 2026 at love for Bukwo on the basic information, education, and communication materials that can be used to sensitize the public, especially in the identification, protection and referral of Victims of Trafficking in Persons prevention, protection, and partnership with other stakeholders engaged in minimizing human trafficking cases and raising awareness.

Police, District officers and other security officers were equipped with basic information, education, community (IEC) materials which an be used to sensitise the public especially in the prevention, protection and partnership with other Stakeholders engaged in minimizing human trafficking cases and raising awareness as to why financial investigations are important while carrying out investigations of human trafficking.

ASP Rukuna Memory the National liaisons officer prevention of Trafficking in persons at the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that they have enhanced the understanding among the leaders and other key actors on how to identify, protect, and make referrals of victims of trafficking while applying the National Referral Guidelines in the prevention of trafficking in person.
Rukuna Memory noted that they have also strengthened and synchronized referral guidelines in the prevention of trafficking in persons, and promoted mechanisms for the empowerment and protection of potential victims of trafficking.

He observed that sebei and Karamoja has been a hot spot of trafficking in persons and they thought it wise to equip the officers with the skills on how to prevent the vice.
Rukuna Memory said that they have informed the officers about the laws and policies present in Uganda so they can use them for prosecutions. He noted that the officers have been ignoring some of the policies that are crucial in the fight against vice. He explained that fighting human trafficking can be done through prevention, prosecution, and protection.

He added that causes of Trafficking in Persons include, Poverty, Unemployment, Lack of awareness, online Recruitment, weak family support, peer pressure, Demand for cheap labor, influence of Technology and unsafe migration among others
He said schemes used include Fake Job Scams, Social media recruitment, Education and scholarship priorities, Romance and relationship deception, fake Business and investment opportunities, fake talent development forums, fake travels and vacation and fake asylum priorities for refugees among others
